This guide explains the general Bureau of Prisons (BOP) visiting-list process for family and other prospective visitors. It is a starting point for federal institutions; state, county, and other custody systems have different procedures, and each BOP institution may have its own current rules.

How the visiting list generally works

  1. Confirm the person’s current institution

    Start with the BOP Inmate Locator. People may be transferred, so do not assume an earlier location is still current. If a recent transfer or missing result leaves the location unclear, use current official BOP information and contact the institution before making travel plans.

  2. The person starts the visiting-list process

    BOP says a person arriving at a new institution receives a Visitor Information Form, completes their part, and sends it to each prospective visitor.

  3. Complete and return the form as directed

    The prospective visitor completes the remaining fields and returns the form using its instructions. The BOP overview says the completed form is returned to the person’s address listed on the form.

  4. Institution staff review the request

    Staff process the information. BOP may request more background information, so a submitted form does not establish approval. Processing and any follow-up vary; there is no single timeline to rely on.

  5. Confirm approval before planning a visit

    BOP says a visitor must be on the person’s visiting list and cleared before visiting. Wait for confirmation and ask the institution if the status or next step is unclear. A request is not a promise of approval.

Before planning travel

Use the current rules for the person’s institution to check each detail that applies to your visit. These requirements can differ by facility.

  • The person’s current institution, especially after a recent transfer or an unclear locator result.
  • Whether you are on the approved visiting list and cleared for a visit.
  • Current visiting days and hours, including holiday or temporary schedule changes.
  • Whether the institution requires a reservation, advance scheduling, or another step before arrival.
  • Accepted identification and any requirements for visitors who are minors, including supervision or documents if required.
  • Current dress rules and what visitors may bring or must leave outside.
  • Where and when to check in, arrival or screening procedures, and what to do if you may be late.
  • Any limits on the number of visitors, visit length, or how often visits may occur.

If a detail is unclear

Read the institution’s current official visiting rules and contact the facility using the contact information on its official BOP page when approval or a rule is unclear. Do this before traveling. A general BOP overview or an older schedule is not confirmation that a particular visit is approved or available.
